Physical Description
Shinsuke or Irei is a pale Asian man with striking blue eyes and dark hair. Though he's 5'11", he still tends to wear shoes with thick soles. Irei weighs about 135 pounds and looks very thin, but has lean muscle. He normally wears dark wash skinny jeans that are often ripped up around the knees. He wears long sleeved shirts to cover up the few scars on his arms which also is used for protection from the sun. He also is constantly wearing dark sunglasses outside.

He has dark blue eyes, and has pierces in both ears. He also has a few scars on the inside of his arms.

Blood Family
Irei's mother, Natsumi Higa, was a beautiful shy young woman who was half Irish American and half Japanese. His father, Shuichi Arakaki, was a Japanese businessman who lived more for business than for family. Both are Deceased. His mother hung herself, and Shuichi died in the virus outbreak.

He didn't really have a permanent job before living in Elysium though from time to time he would charge for exorcisms, contacting a family's deceased loved one so they could have a nice little chat, or somethings a little more complicated that would be a much bigger pay off.

He's skilled in martial arts, and he likes to shadow box.
Physical Weaknesses
He had no idea how to swim. He has a weak stomach and is unable to eat a lot of food in one sitting. He's often sick or sickly because of his weakened immune system brought about because of his past drug use as a teenager. He has a very addictive personality.
Magical Abilities
He has a very sensitive ability to feel and communicate with spirits of those who have passed but refuse to move on. After he was trained, learned the basic an more advanced necromancer abilities. He is able to help these ghosts move on to the next world or to create temporary bodies for them as well as other magical practices. With all his abilities, he needs to use talismens, pieces of power, and complicated rituals that are similar to old Japanse Shinto tradition.
Personal Skills & Training
Irei has spent a few years studying martial arts and has become quite good at it. He is a very flexible young man and he works very hard at keeping his body healthy despite his vices. He used to drink a lot, but not as much now thanks to Sascha's influence.
Before he met Sascha, he was trained by an older necromancer on how to use and control his abilities. The control he developed from the combination of martial arts training and learning how to use his magic helped him incredibly to deal with the spirits and addictions often plaguing him.
To be able to have the spirits communicate through him, he normally has a few drinks so his connection to his body is slowed. That way it's less like his soul is being ripped out and replaced. It's a technique he developed from back in the days when taking drugs. It just makes the whole process a lot less painful.
Personal Weaknesses
He sometimes has trouble with human connections and emotions with others because of his experiences with his family. Also animals become very erratic and just start acting weird around him because of the spirits and ghosts that cling to him. He also smokes too much, and if Sasha's not a around, drinks too much. He has an irrational fear of deep water and he also can be very irritable.
Personality
He's a very serious young man. Events in his life have left him rather empty emotionally. He doesn't trust others easily, aside from Sascha who's been a very close friend for years. Although he seems very unapproachable, he still maintains a quirky sort of humor that he had to develop to contend with the constant presence of death around him, not to mention Sascha's weirdness. He's not easy to excite or to sneak up on, but on occasions he can collapse into a fit of hilarity or make jokes that he, at least, finds funny.
Irei can sometimes be seen pacing back and forth doing what seems to be talking to himself. He actually has a spirit that has basically attached itself to him and refuses to leave. The spirit doesn't have any powers on it's own, but it certainly makes Irei look a bit bonkers when he answers it. Animals, and some beings with heightened sensitivity would be able to at least sense the ghost around him, which can be quite unsettling.
If he's not with his friend, he spends that time alone reading one of his books or trying to find something to do to pass the time. He can get bored very quickly, but has found that he really likes to cook. In fact he often ends up cooking the meals for Sascha and himself.

History:
The Arakaki family was a very big presence in importing goods from Okinawa throughout Japan and the world. They were a growing business organization that sought to gain importance nationally. Shuichi Arakaki was a second generation business man in the organization and was giving the job of regional sales manager/representative by his uncles who owned the business. He was actually a very competent young business man
Natsumi Higa, Irei's mother, was the daughter of a mixed family. Her mother, Irene O'Connor, was Irish American and her father Ichigou Higa was full Japanese. It was an odd match for the time, but they were in love. Sadly soon after Natsumi was born, they died in a car accident and Natsumi was left with her grandparents who owned a very popular and traditional ryokan.
Shuichi Arakaki and Natsumi Higa, met through family connections. They were encouraged to date by their families after it was formally announced they were to be betrothed. Shuichi protested the betrothal to his family but was soon coerced into believing it was in the best interest of the family and company to be allied with the prominent Higas. Natsumi was a very shy young woman and silently accepted the match.
A year after they were wed a baby boy was born. He was named Shinsuke Arakaki. He was all together a normal baby. His mother was able to pour all of her doting love on him when he was very young because his father was gone all the time anyways on business trips. It was soon discovered at that these "business trips" were actually meetings with another woman. The affair devastated Natsumi's reputation even though she had obviously done nothing wrong. Even her grandparents looked at her differently and refused to let her and her baby come live with them. Shinsuke's mother was soon driven by loneliness to drink and started pushing away her little boy.
Pushed prematurely away from his mother, Shinsuke didn't start to talk until the age of five, and when he spoke, it was to no one in particular. Because of this, he was teased at school. Eventually the jeers and taunting thrown at him became rocks as his strange behavior of sometimes talking to things no one else could see. These flare ups of seeing, hearing, and being able to communicate with ghosts were a signal of the power within him, but his father believed it to be something completely different. At the age of 10 he was entered into a mental institution. He remained there for five years, until he was able to convince the doctors that he was "cured". He continued to see spirits at various intervals, but refused to acknowledge them in public any longer. He learned the less people knew about his strange abilities, the better. When he was finally able to return home he found that not much had changed since he was sent away. His mother was wreaked by depression and his father hadn't been home in months. Unable to handle this kind of home life anymore, he left at the age of 15. His mother, unable to stand the repercussions of a divorce during that time in Japan, committed suicide not long after.
Going by Irei now, he walked the streets and lived where he could. He got odd jobs so he could get something to eat and if that didn't work he found a way to steal what he needed. He also became addicted to hallucinogens, pot, and other drugs while all the street. He still had no control over his powers, and sometimes when he was in a drug induced high and often he'd slip into a trance-like state where spirits might be able to speak through him.
It was during such an episode, a year after he had left home, that his future teacher found him. Sato, Ito took Irei in after sending the spirit out of him. Ito Sensei explained to Irei what he was and trained him in the use of his powers. Ito Sensei not only showed him techniques to control his abilities, but also how to control himself. His teacher helped wean him off of the drugs he had been so dependent upon and helped him through the painful detox. It had been a very long time before Irei had felt safe with anyone.
His teacher was very knowledgeable but, he was also a fairly old man. Ito died when Irei was about 20 years old, only four years after he had come to live with him. They had been master and pupil, but now, once again, Irei was alone in the world. He didn't want to live alone in Japan anymore. Too much had happened to him there. He worked and saved money to get enough to buy a discounted one way ticket to America. It was specifically for New York. He packed up his master's old books, and left for the States.
It was another few years before he met Sasha. He landed in New York, hoping to be able to find his grandmother's family, Irene O'Connor. He found many O'Connors, but none of them knew of an Irene in their family. He eventually gave up again and settled into his new surroundings, making money off of exorcisms and letting families communicate with their dead loved ones. The money he made fed the couple of addictions he hadn't been able to kick, alcohol and cigarettes. He also took free night classes to learn English, because though he knew a little from his school boy days, he definitely needed a refresher course to live there.
Then came Sascha. The southern Professor who wanted to talk to his deceased wife and had heard of the young Asian man who could call back the dead and speak for them. He remembered that when Sascha walked into his ratty little apartment back then, he looked a little disappointed that there weren't drapes up, a crystal ball set up on a little round table, and that Irei wasn't dressed up like a girly gypsy (although, the last part might have been the biggest disappointment). Irei had shaken his head and had just asked if he want to talk to his wife or not.
He sat down at his table and poured himself a drink for the channeling of a spirit. He drank down the glass and leaned back in the chair, letting the drink do its magic as Sasha sat down across from him. He successfully connected his wife, and let her use his body to hear her husband tenderly say goodbye. When Irei was once again conscious and aware of his body, the new age hippie had his tongue down his throat. Needless to say, Irei was rather surprised. Ever since then they've been friends and ended up traveling together to Elysium when they heard of it as being a sanctuary for those left after the virus broke out and the wars began. |
